When you are playing on XP-save servers your current xp is assigned to a special file within the folder where ET is installed in. This prevents you from losing all your hardly earned XP on a server when reconnecting a few hours or days later. In case you need to format your pc or reinstall ET you should backup some files from ET to keep all your settings and XP.

1. Go to ET's installation-folder
The folder should be located in C:/Program Files/Enemy Territory (of course this depends on where you installed your ET exactly in). Inside this folder it should look like in the screenshot below. Of course this depends on how much you play on different mods, e.g., if you never have played jaymod, the jaymod-folder prolly won't exist there.

2. Go to the etmain/-Folder
When you doubleclick the etmain-folder it opens and you should see a lot of files in it.

3. Backup the data

The most important file to back up is the etkey-file. This file contains a certain key which assigns your XP on different servers to you, so you can reconnect to a server where the XP saves forever and still got all your upgrades, ranks and XP. What's also worth backing up is the whole profiles-folder, which contains an etconfig.cfg. This file contains all your key-bindings, graphics-settings and so on.

Note: The profiles-folder exists in every single mod-folder, means nq/profiles/, jaymod/profiles/, etpro/profiles/ and so on. Those configs aren't 100% identical, since every single config contains also settings for the respective mod, so the best thing is, to backup every single profiles-folder.

The easiest way

Simply move the whole Enemy Territory-folder to an external harddisk or burn it on DVD and when you're done with e.g. formatting just move the ET-folder back to where it originally was. The only thing you might need to do then, is, to create a new shortcut to the ET.exe.

The big advantage of this method is, that you can't accidentally forget a file/folder to backup, since you're backing up simply everything. Another advantage is, that you don't need to re-download all the mods, maps and packs again, which can be quite time-intensive.
